McSorley gladly meets his match at 'Creek wrestling tourney

BEAVERCREEK - Edgewood junior Nick McSorley had been looking for someone to push him this season.

The two-time state qualifier had not been able to find anyone to push him for all six minutes, but that changed in the finals of the Beavercreek Classic January 10 at Beavercreek High School.

McSorley recorded a reversal with just five seconds left to take an 8-7 win over Beavercreek senior Jeremy Jones in the 119 final. McSorley built a 4-1 lead before Jones came back to tie the match at 4-4. Jones took a 7-6 lead with less than 20 seconds left, but McSorley came back.

"He's good, I give him that. He's good," McSorley said after being named the Outstanding Wrestler while tying Edgewood's school record for career titles with 11. "I am glad I found someone who can go toe-to-toe with me and give me a challenge.

"I love these kind of matches."

McSorley was joined on the top of the podium by freshman Jordan Puska, who defeated top- seeded Brendon Sexton of Franklin 9-1 in the 112 finals, however it was not enough for them to move into contention for the team title.

That battle was as close as McSorley's title match, with Dublin Coffman squeezing out a 208.5 to 208 win over host Beavercreek. Coffman went 3-5 in the finals while the Beavers went 4-3, getting titles from Gavin Moore (135), Dylan Bybee (160), Travis Johnson (171) and Adam Walls (285). Miami Trace was third with 177, Edgewood fourth with 128.5 and Franklin fifth with 94. Lakewood St. Eds White team was sixth with 59 points.

Bybee, who is filling in for the injured Jake Berman, claimed the 160 title with a 7-6 win over top-seeded Cody Snyder of Miami Trace to improve to 4-0 as a varsity wrestler.

"It is a little help from God and believing in myself that will do great things," Bybee said. "It is pretty amazing. Hard work pays off.

"I've been waiting for this all four years. It is good to win this championship. I am very happy."

Bybee's title was one reason Beaver coach Gary Wise was not disappointed with the second-place finish heading into today's Division I State Duals at Wadsworth.

"I never look at team scores that much," Wise said. "We were right there in the thick of it, that's why I'm not to upset about it.

"We had some great outstanding individuals in the field this year."

Two of those squared off in the 152 final where Franklin's returning state qualifier Eric Hildenbrand claimed a 4-1 win over previously undefeated Zach Zehler of Edgewood.

"He's a tough wrestler," Hildenbrand said. "It is getting to the end of the year and this is a good win for me. I need to start getting in a groove here for the end of the season."
