I Do Remember
by Sarah Curry

I remember when we used to pick berries.
I remember when you used to push me on
the swings.
I remember putting my hand into yours.
I remember when you took me to the
Sunshine Cafe.
I remember you giving me piggy-back rides.
I remember when you came back from
London.
I remember you gave me a ring that turned
my finger green.
I do remember.
I remember Mommy saying that you were
in the hospital.
I remember you were very sick.
I remember an itchy dress on a June day.
I remember seeing you in a brown,
wooden box.
I do remember.
I remember riding in a limo.
I remember seeing stones in the ground
with names on them.
I remember seeing the wooden box you
were in, being put in the ground.
I do remember.

Remember by Veronica McDaniel

Remember the sun beating down
On the warm Texas air
Embracing the summer breeze
Throughout the quiet neighborhood.

I remember a dark empty preschool
Sitting calmly across the street
And how I longed to go
To school with the other kids.

I remember a young boy's face
Peeking from behind the building
Soon hearing the hum
Of a tune to a familiar song.

I remember giggles and smiles
As he chased me,
the smell of dust and dirt through our hair.

I remember that day as clear as can be
Playing like a scene from a movie
The scene of my first crush
And my only lasting memory of a
childhood in Texas.

Pink Stucco by Sarah Konz

Pink stucco tickles my dark fingertips
Mamaw preaches, don't leave the room,
But I crave salty lips and stinging feet.
I float to the beach, mfeet barely
Grace the cement as I watch
Green geckos scramble under my feet
To light stucco pots with Florida palms.
The Florida palms praise the sun,
I hug the pink hotel
As I rest my eyes on
Baby blue and
heavy cotton clouds.

A drop falls from heaven, ice
My eyes wrinkle up
And I let slide down my face.
My mom always said rain was
Zach playing in heaven's sprinklers.
Just as I take a breath to remember that
My friend now has wings,
Clouds begin to pour
And I dance
Across the white grains
Lifting my feet, careful not to burn.
I can hear them calling for me but
I'm restless,
Restless as the geckos dancing with me.

Saltwater runs around red-painted
Toes, splashing
Instinct controls me because for
The first time in awhile
I'm with Zach.
I dance with my friend
Under heaven's sprinkler,
Geckos and Florida palms
Cheer us on and we put on
A show for the shells until
My toes get soggy and the tide
Thrusts against my knees.

Chicago by Lauren Warner

Thick clouds coat the sky like a heavy
blanket,
the wind is rapidly blowing through my
long curls,
As my shoes click on the cement beneath me.

I grab my red coat, lying lightly on my
shoulders,
And squeeze it tighter, in hope of securing warmth,
While we walk toward our destination.

Gleaming windows drawing my interest,
Advertising expensive clothing,
A life of luxury.

I stare in amazement
At a world I am not used to,
No longer in a small town.

City buildings surround me,
Taxis flying past me,
Men and women dressed professionally.

Thick clouds coating the ksy like a heavy
blanket,
The wind still blowing through my long
curls,
And my shoes clicking on the cement
beneath me
Are the least of my worries
As I walk in amazement
On my first trip to Chicago.

Insignificance by John Frahm

Ding.
The bell rings
Welcoming us into
The warm store
From the crip outdoors,
A particularly cold morning,
The second Saturday of October.
The scent of new Leather
Baseball gloves filled the air
Then, from the corner of
My eye, I spotted it
The insignificant little ball
But to innocent eyes
A wondrous toy
Bringing years of joy
I slowly started toward it
It was calling my name
Every little step, taking
Me closer and closer
Until I was staring face
to face with it.
I reached out and
Picked it up
It was smooth, like
A rock worn down by time
In a riverbed
I set it down, and gave it a tap
Then another, and another
Then I felt something
Something I didn't understand
Something building
A passion.

The Truth About Why I Love Fricker's Wings by Keeton Ritter

The thing that burns your mouth
and that is so good at the same time.
Sauces dripping all over you and on the
bone plate.
And the breading is so good soaked with the
smell of the deep fryer.
But what waits on the inside is best of all . . .

It has the thing that makes a chicken wing
a chicken wing.
The ckicken is so tender and sweet with a
little taste added from the breading.
The way you have to twist and turn on the
bones make it even more fun to eat.

If a chicken wing were a person since she
is so tender and sweet
she would cook me all the ckicken wings
I could possibly eat.
Sitting on the porch together at night
watching the chickens fight
for their right on the kitchen table the
next night.

I'm grateful for all the chicken that gave
up their wings
just to please the taste of mankind with
Fricker's Chicken Wings.

If I could have it my way it would be great.
Wings all the time and the great sauces that
come with them.
When you enter Frisker's it might seem okay,
but when you leave you will be amazed.
So now that you know, you must go there
and fill up a piece of you with wings that
had been missing for a long time!
